I took this photo from the steps of St. Martin's in the Crypt Church across from Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery in central LondonTime
It was just after lunchtime. I had been sitting on the steps during a break from wandering. Up until that point, I hadn't had much luck in seeing anything interesting. And then this scene sort of unfolded.Lighting
It was a cold yet pleasantly bright day. The sunshine seemed to bombard the huge hoarding which I used as a canvas (so to speak).Equipment
I used my standard canon kit lens (EF 18-55mm). I did not use my tripod nor any kind of other peripheral. On reflection, I continuously interchange between this lens and my telephoto lens. I am sort of glad that I was already to shoot with the standard lens otherwise I might have missed the opportunity or it may have turned out differently.Inspiration
I loved the hoarding as a canvas. There was something gently amusing in the stark, possibly melancholic, contrast between the sometimes overlooked, lofty, grand aspirations of art and the hard reality of the street. Moreover, the thought of the streetsweeper cleaning up after the people walking ahead of him was, to me at least, amusing and somehow symbolic of an insanely strong work ethic.Editing
I simply converted this picture to B&W using Creative Kit's software suiteIn my camera bag
As most of you may know, I lug a bag comprising the following: my trusty Canon EOS 1000D (Rebel) with the standard kit lens (EF 18-55mm), a telephoto lens (USM EF 70-300mm), a tupperware box full of iphone peripherals (olio clip, fish and wide angle lenses), cables, batteries, memory cards and a lens pen (cleaner). I also carry a bottle of water, a snack of some kind and possibly a second camera (Canon SX Powershot with 2 types of built in macro lenses) that I picked up as a bargain from a charity shop. Interestingly, I have stopped receiving phone calls from the Hazmat team regarding the biological state of an uneaten baguette. For the moment...:-DFeedback
I would gently suggest looking for naturally occurring "canvases" in your city. It might be a simple brick wall, a big advertising poster and ALLOW people to walk across/by it. It is akin to watching live TV. And then see if anything interesting unfolds. So find a comfortable vantage point and watch the treasure unfold. As always, I am grateful to the Viewbug community for their inspiration. Good luck to all!
