Loggerhead shrikes are related to the mockingbird and are actually considered songbirds, but act more like birds of prey. They perch high on the limbs of trees watching for large insects, rodents, lizards and even small birds. They are still fairly common in the south and west, but their numbers are declining. Captured at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area near Sacramento, California

Truly efficient killers of song birds. I watch the northern shrikes here preying on chickadees very often. The aerial acrobatics are fantastic as the chase is on
