Snow geese, at least 100,000 strong, flock to rest in the wetlands of the Merced National Wildlife Refuge in central California during their annual spring migration. It was quite a sight to see as they flew overhead, nearly blocking out the sun before landing in a loud, honking blanket of white and black feathers to preen, wash and eat. Snow geese breed in colonies from late May to mid-August on the Canadian and Northern Alaskan tundra near the coast. They fly very high and nearly 3,000 miles each way along a narrow corridor of the North American flyway during each migration direction.
