Deteriorating walls at Fort Zachary Taylor.
Fort Taylor was built in 1846 as part of coastal defenses and helped to deter blockade runners off the coast of Florida during the Civil War.
Although the fort never saw battle, its high, thick walls and 140 cannons made for a formidable defensive presence during the Civil War, Spanish American War, Word War I and World War II.
In 1971 the fort was designated as a National Historic Landmark and was opened to the public. The fort and surrounding beach are popular with tourists and locals.
