Among wading birds black-crowned night herons are unusual in that they are active at night as well as during the day. I have not found any literature that explains how they are able to see what they catch under the water at night. Their diet is variable. While consisting mainly of fish they also eat squid, crustaceans, aquatic insects, frogs, snakes, clams, mussels, rodents, eggs, chicks and carrion.
