I recently moved house, and in clearing my life into boxes managed to create some space in my lounge which I though would be enough to set up lighting and a backdrop to create a temporary home studio. All of the images in my gallery featuring this model (Joceline) were shot in a single morning in that small space, and we created different looks by using different coloured backgrounds, shooting with both strobes and natural light, and one or two costume changes.Time
Shot late morning in early Summer, but with a high shutter speed and an appropriate aperture the ambient light entering the room was cancelled out, allowing the sculpting light of a single strip box placed to the left of picture to do it's job. A reflector to the right helped soften the impact of that strip box slightly. The strip box was large enough to virtually light the model from head to toe (important as she's 6' 2"!)Lighting
Using a strip box with an egg crate allowed me to keep the light skimming across the front of the model but preserved shadows in the background which allowed the black fabric to blend into the background.Equipment
I used a Bowens Gemini strobe in the strip box activated by a pocket wizard. Canon 5d mkIII with 24-70mm lens.Inspiration
I'd seen another photographer's work using a model wearing a Venetian mask in some multiple exposure images. I liked the look of the mask and so bought one online for future use. The pose and side lighting were inspired by a former girlfriend with a similar physique to the model. She would come out of her bathroom and be sculpted by a strip of light at the edge of the curtains. The two ideas came together when I had a dream about the film Eyes Wide Shut!Editing
Very little - some retouching to remove blemishes from the model's skin.In my camera bag
My Canon 5d (recently upgraded to the Mk VI) and a range of lenses that take me from 17 to 200mm in focal length. (A teleconverter allows me to extend the top end to 280mm). My bag also has a range of ND filters including some big stoppers that I use in landscape photography and when shooting sites with lots of tourists to help erase them from the scene.Feedback
Have a clear idea of what you want and how you want to shoot it before you start. I used Pinterest for some inspiration but only as a starting point before taking ideas in my own direction.
