Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot from a rooftop bar in Deep Ellum near downtown Dallas. The scaffolding is actually a traipse frame, but I don't think they use it anymore.

Time

This was taken just after the sun set in early spring.

Lighting

I used available light for this shot. The clouds cooperated and caught the final rays of the sun with some nice colors showing against the city....

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D with a 28mm F1.8 lens for this shot, although I had the aperture set smaller to get a bit more sharpness. This was shot hand-held, but I was seated so I could steady things a bit

Inspiration

This was taken around Easter and there were a number of places having 'adult/evil' bunny walks in the area - I was in the area to shoot the folks in costume and couldn't pass up a few sunset shots.

Editing

I played with the colors and lighting a bit in Lightroom, but I didn't do a lot to this one. It was intended to be a bit industrial so a bit of clutter didn't really distract from the shot.

In my camera bag

These days I'll usually have the 70D, a 5D Mark III, and a few extra lens that fit what I'll be shooting. I don't like changing lenses out in the open, so I'll try and pick out what I think will work beforehand. Don't forget extra batteries!

Feedback

Unless I'm going for a silhouette I like to shoot sunsets on partly cloudy days, when the sun is either obscured by a thin line of clouds or has just dropped below the horizon. Shooting directly into the sun makes for really harsh lighting
