The delicious golden light poured through the dense vegetation producing fantastic highlights and turning the sky apricot and lavender.

Leisure Bay near Port Edward in KwaZulu-Natal South Africa. The night before I had been camping in Richards Bay and it had been raining all night and all morning. Everything was wet, so I packed up and set out to Port Edward. I found this amazing campsite and the owners were the friendliest caring people I've ever met. The following morning I awoke to this sunrise. Perhaps this is what the first day on earth looked like.

Behind The Lens

Location

I was on a solo trip around the coast of South Africa. It had been raining all the way from Richards Bay to Port Edward, where I set up camp for the night. The next morning the rain had stopped and I was greeted with this beautiful sunset. This was taken from a camp site called Leisure Bay Camp Site in Leuisre Bay right next to Port Edward.

Time

I woke up before sunset and although there were a few clouds still hanging around the sun broke through at roughly 5:30am.

Lighting

The natural lighting was magnificent. The oranges, purples, and blues created a perfect backlight that turned alot of the vegetation a beautiful golden colour. Can't beat natrual light.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D MIII with a Canon 24-105mm. My ISO was quite low at 160 so I opened to f/4.0. I liked this instead of closing down to get more focus as the slightly out of focus background created a surreal, dreamy like effect.

Inspiration

I love landscapes and I love the colours created during sunrises and sunsets. This sunrise was particularly beautiful as it had been raining all night and everythign seemed fresh and clean. The air was crisp but becoming warmer every second and the dense vegetation made me think that perhaps this is what it looked like on day one.

Editing

I like to shoot certain scenes over or under exposed specifically for post processing. With this phot I shot it quite underexposed and exposed for the sun as I knew I could lift the shadows back up. I did take a reference photo on auto just so I could match some of the highlights. I pushed the shadows and darks up. Added some clarity and increased saturation in the oranges and purples.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D Mark III. 24-105mm Canon f/4.0. Canon 70mm - 200mm f/2.8. Tripod. 3 extra batteries. 3 extra cards. Intervolometer. Cleaning equipment. Charger. Sometines I have a second Canon 5D Mark II. Polarizer and variable ND Grad.

Feedback

Get up early. A lot. Every sunrise and every sunset is different. Check the weather for your sunrises especially. Clouds always make sunrise and sunset shots much more interresting. So look out for this. If possible go and recce your location before, and use a sun tracking app so you know where the sun will rise and set. This way you can setup your composition and be ready for that magic moment.
