Congratulations - you are deservedly the People's Choice in my Town or City Squares challenge. Great use of a fish-eye view to capture the breadth of this popular open space - a 'green lung' in the built up environment of the city. Thanks for your entry.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Klyde Warren Park in downtown Dallas. The park is built over a highway that runs through the center of town and features food trucks, dog parks, fountains, and other amenities.

Time

This was shot near noon in spring. The sun was almost directly overhead but the clouds kept the lighting from being too harsh

Lighting

This is an HDR combination of three different exposures to help bring out all the color with the subdued lighting available.

Equipment

I used a Canon 70D and Rokinon 8mm aspherical fisheye lens for this shot. The Rokinon is an entry level full-manual lens, but will take nice shots if used correctly. I did not use a flash or tripod for this shot.

Inspiration

This may have been my first trip to the park - I was recovering from knee surgery and was under doctor's order to get out and walk on it - taking the train downtown to wander around with a camera seemed like a nice way to do that!

Editing

This is an HDR combo of three different exposures done in Lightroom. The bottom third of the shot was cropped out to give more of a panoramic effect, other than that I just enhanced the colors a bit.

In my camera bag

I normally carry a Canon 70D with a Tamron 16/300mm mounted and a 5D Mk III with any number of lenses ranging from a 8mm diagonal fisheye to a Sigma 200-500mm telephoto, depending on what I'll be shooting. I'm usually looking for cool things at random while traveling, so I don't get to plan a lot of shots beforehand - I've found I spend the most time with various prime lenses and the 17-300mm Tamron though, the Tamron's range lets you capture almost anything on the fly and reduces the need for lens changes out in the open

Feedback

I kind of like the aspherical fisheye for certain landscapes, it gives an interesting effect. Just be careful how you place the horizon when composing the shot - if it's not not placed level and dead-center in the frame you end up with a pronounced fishbowl look - you can always crop it later!
