The Superstition Wilderness Area is located East of Phoenix, Arizona and is comprised of over 160,000 acres. This shot was taken in late afternoon near Lost Dutchman State Park.

The exterior of the Superstitions have several well marked trails offering breathtaking views overlooking the Phoenix Valley. Visibility of over 70 miles can be seen on a clear day.
The interior of the mountain range is extremely rugged with limited access, no facilities and few, sporadically marked, trails.

The Superstitions are believed to be home to the famously rumored Lost Dutchman Goldmine. Never to be found after the old prospector Jacob Waltz died in 1890.
Waltz did leave a hand drawn map to his secret location on his death bed. The search has been on ever since. Even to this day, more than a few have perished searching for treasure. It is far too easy to become lost in the mazes of canyons, vast wilderness containing snakes, scorpions, mountain lions and, to be overcome by the desert heat.
