Behind The Lens

Location

In my studio

Time

Mid noon

Lighting

A pretty simple set up from memory.. or rather deconstructing my own lighting from the photo as my memory is poor :) I think there's a kicker, well more a hair light photo left. I imagine I used my small grided a beauty given the har nose shadow and a little fill light lifting the right side of the face unless it was also the hair light to make sure not too many of the shadows were blown. There's also a grided spot on the backdrop.

Equipment

5d mk 3 and 24-70L i think.

Inspiration

I fancied doing some moody photos with a wet look.and the glass as another option. In reality it's a piece of plastic held up between two stands and we messed around with ways of using the water and creating atmosphere, and using coloured gels, powder and motion for the non glass shots.

Editing

I shot it in black and white on the back of the camera i think, but as it's RAW they come out colour anyways. It is however nice to do it in camera just to get a better feel for contrasts if you think you're gona convert to BW in post.

In my camera bag

Canon 5d mk 3 24-70L 2.8 70-200L 2.8 17-40L f4 85mm 1.8 Plus a few triggers, flashguns and speedlite modifers.

Feedback

Having modifiers with grids to stop light spill and produce more direction and harder light will add to the atmosphere. I work in quite a small space with a white ceiling, so for me grid tend to be essential use for anything moody, editorial or that isn't high key. The rest is cunning and using props effectively such as constructing a fake window rather than finding one in the perfect space.
