Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this locally (Solihull, Birmingham) at an old derelict farm house. It was a collaboration shoot that came about after London based contortionist Francesca "Bendy Lady" messaged about potentially working together. We cast a for and MUA which resulted in Leicester based Leanne Brown joining the party who also helped out in assisting on the shoot.

Time

Roughly 3/4pm may be? There was maybe the slightest kiss of natural light coming in through a big broken bay window, but on the grand scale of the shot it would barely register.

Lighting

I was running two speedlites as they're my only battery powered options on location. One an old old old Canon I bought secondhand years ago and have for ettl functionality, and the other a cheap manual £45 Yongnuo. Top left the light was shot via 60" shoot through umbrella and the other positioned in the bottom right via a Bessel 60x90cm gridded speedbox.. a softbox that goes up and down like an umbrella. I love them, quick, (semi)compact and softbox quality and control on location with out the headaches.

Equipment

Canon 5d mk3 and 24-70L. Flash as above.

Inspiration

Francesca and I were discussing ideas and knew we wanted to be out on location, and i always fancied doing a derelict ballet shoot. The location I had used before so I ran it past Francesca and created a moodboard. However this idea came after that but a few days before we actually shot. I'm not sure if I was watching a movie or TV programme or what, but something inspired me to look out for a birds eye view shot knowing that the house was missing floor boards and I was bound to be able to construct something where I could shoot down on a subject. I just wanted it to feel as though she was innocently practicing ballet at this interesting juxtaposition of a location and completely oblivious of the camera. I brushed a space using a floor board that was lying around to create a "dance floor" and realised when I got in to position that it made a handy natural frame that was begging to be included in the shot and add even more context to the location.

Editing

Yes indeedy, I put a slight radial blur around Francesca to add a sense of movement and energy.

In my camera bag

I like shoulder bags and mines not so big, so a Canon 5d mk 3 and 24-70L if I can get away with traveling light.. maybe a 50mm 1.8 as a spare lens just in case. Sometimes i'll throw out the 50mm and squeeze in my ettl flash and/or 70-200L depending on what i'm intending on shooting. If I feel I need more or back ups for a more serious shoots, then out comes the backpack! That'll be loaded with all the above, a 7d second body, possibly my Yongnuo flash too and Yonguo triggers, a monopod, a flashbender and of course with both bags a bunch of cards an batteries.

Feedback

For a derelict location such as this, the models safety comes first! If you're exploring make sure you're up front and looking out for where you're standing and that it's safe to shoot. I can justify hurting myself on an adventure but not someone else's of course. For this shot I was lying down and had floorboards up to my waste and had to spread my arms across two flanking beams, so it definitely had it's hazards.
