Fantastic shot from above. Very neatly executed.

Behind The Lens

Location

Thru floor boards in the room above in a derelict house just over the road from my old house. A year later someone burnt top the top floors!

Time

It was mid after noon, but i used strobes to over power any light coming through the (lack of) windows.

Lighting

A grided softbox either side of the model. Pretty easy set up with mid to large boxes.

Equipment

Canon 5d mk3 and probably my 24-70

Inspiration

I was speaking to a Francesca contortionist about doing a shoot, and we didn't want it to be studio bound. We cast and got MUA Leanne Brown in on the action and headed to a derelict house near by. It was a shot i had in mind and was the most excited about taking before walking in to the house, although it only came to me the night before while I was exploring ideas in my head.

Editing

Yes. I made a dance floor on the day using a piece of stray floorboard, which coincidently created a frame of dust and rubble that fell with in my focal length... a happy accident as i just wanted a clear floor at first! I soon realised that that helped frame the photo when I framed up from above, and along with the pose, I added a little radial spin that i never intended to do 'til i opened up photoshop. It just added that bit of movement to the photo and helps sell the narrative. Normally i try to avoid retouching unrealistically, but it's a subtle addition rather than a distraction.

In my camera bag

5dmk 3 and a bunch of lenses, flashes and accessories that change depending on the shoot.

Feedback

Preparation and ideas make for happy coincidences. You rarely get lucky when you're not trying to. Equally trying to be flexible when something doesn't quite pan out as you thought it may are probably the two mental advantages you need to take to every shoot.
