Behind The Lens

Location

This photo shoot was taken at a private Country Club in central PA. This particular photo from the shoot was taken in a semi-circular room that has windows all the way around that let natural sunlight in to surround the subject.

Time

This was taken about 12:00pm, just as the sun was shining into the room.

Lighting

The lighting was all natural lighting with the exception of a silver 5' reflector. The reflector was used to light the face and to add the highlights in the eyes.

Equipment

Camera was a Nikon D810, with a Nikon 50mm 1.4f prime lens, and a 5' reflector with silver side in use.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this photo came with the idea of a commercial fashion model shoot. The location was chosen for the decadency of the surroundings, and lighting of the room in particular.

Editing

Post processing consisted of some sharpening and color balancing. The model, Jessie, has incredible natural electric blue eyes and the purist white teeth I've ever seen. So the only color balancing was done with the sunlight color.

In my camera bag

Nikon D810, with Nikon 24-70mm 2.8f lens. Cleaning cloth, cleaning solution, spare batteries, and an array of lenses depending on the shoot.

Feedback

My advice to capturing images like this is to always use a reflector with natural lighting. With the reflector, you can control the amount, size, and color of light being bounced onto the subject. By moving the reflector closer or further away, you can control the brightness of the light, as well as the size you want, and where you want the light to brighten. Using a reflector to bounce highlights into the eyes is essential, otherwise the eyes look "dead" and not alive. As you can see with this image, the eyes are bright, full of life, shiny, and brilliant by using the reflector. Without the reflector, the eyes and face would be more in shadow and be more dull and loss of color.
