Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at an exclusive Country Club in central Pennsylvania.

Time

The photo shoot lasted about 4 hours, starting at around noon, and shifting around the building to different locations throughout.

Lighting

The lighting for this shot was all natural lighting. The room in which it was taken was a very nice sun room/lounge with a fireplace over looking the grounds. The room was semi-circular, allowing for the light to surround the subject, and light the room with a soft, beautiful, warm light. The room color was yellow, which added more tone to the over all warmth of the image and skin tone.

Equipment

This was handheld using a Nikon D810 camera, with Nikon 50mm 1.4f prime lens. A 5' silver reflector was used to bounce light onto model for highlights on the hair and in the eyes, and to brighten facial tones.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this photo was the hat that I bought at a thrift store that was actually brand new. I thought it was extremely classy and put the hat into my collection of props and wardrobe for future use. Later I came across this beautiful model, Jessie, who I envisioned wearing such a hat, because she reminded me of a young Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine Middleton, also known as "Kate Middleton", because of her blue eyes and long flowing brown hair. Jessie has a similar personality as Kate, very fun, smart, and vivacious. I wanted to do the shoot at an upscale location, which we were able to get permission to shoot at this very exclusive private club.

Editing

There was very little post needed for this image, because most of my shooting I make adjustments in the camera as I am shooting to save post production time. I shoot full manual all the time for many years, so this gives me the advantage of knowing exactly what I want it to look like as I shoot, and to make adjustments to achieve it.

In my camera bag

Nikon D810 camera, Nikon 70-200mm 2.8f VR lens attached, cleaner, rags, straps, and whatever lenses I may be using for a shoot.

Feedback

Capturing handheld images as clear as this can be quite a challenge, and can take years to be able to master it. The more you practice, the more you will gain the skills to do so. Holding your breath, and or controlled breathing, as well as steady hands, and balance are essential to mastering handheld shots. In the beginning of learning great handheld skills, you start out holding the camera very tight and not paying attention to your breathing, body movements, balance, but will eventually start to pay attention to them as you analyze your images as to why they are not so clear. A key is too not grip the camera tightly, and to allow the weight of the camera rest in your hands. The more you get used to doing that, the easier it will become, and the more relaxed the rest of your body will be, because stiffening up your body, hands, and arms, actually makes you shake more. I also would suggest having a reflector available with natural light shooting, as you you will always find a use for it.
