Location
This shot as been taken at Moorish Castle in Sintra - Portugal.Time
This photo as been taken in hot summer day, during a walk thru Sintra. It was my first time at the Moorish Castle, in the company of my wife, brother and sister in law, and i remember that all four of us were becoming tired because of the long walk and the intense heat, and we decided to rest a bit in that location, and what a great choice it was! This was taken in August 23, 2016 at 4:40 PM.Lighting
I wanted the image to show the distance between my location versus the highest point of the tower. By including the human element in the photo, it ended up gaining a completely different notion of scale, becoming more dynamic. The light of that hour gave the image great contrasts, being the highlights full texture, turning the story more dramatic and with a sense of adventure.Equipment
Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark III Aperture: 8/1 ISO: 125 Shutter Speed: 1/800 Focal Length: 24/1Inspiration
The location and shape of the castle by it self push us to look up. Being at one of the lowest points of that zone of the wall, the position where i was standing really gives the sensation of distance and hight of tower. Having in the viewfinder a good angle, nature, architecture and history, that couple entered the frame in that moment, and with them i really completed the set by giving it a human element. All of us did have the same feeling in common, we here preparing for the climb to the highest point of the wall.Editing
I did some post-processing on the photo giving it more contrast, by adjusting the highlights and the shadows, and adding clarity in some areas to increase the textures, especially in rocks thru the centre of the image. In my camera bag
The preparation of the journey is very important, but once in a while i pick it up the camera and go for a walk searching for the unknown, and it is one of the thinks that i enjoy more in photography. For that reason, my first choice is Canon 5D MK III with a EF 24-105mm F4 lens, but depending of the area that i am visiting and the weather condition. I also carry with me a EF 16-35mm F4, and a EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM, its a lot of weight in my backpack but the tiredness normally is rewarded great image quality.Feedback
For a shoot like this you need to planning the area that you will visit, have patient, and sometimes a bit of luck. The reality of this particular photo is that was a mere "glimpse" in front of me while i stand there for a rest. I was in the right place at the right time, i mean, planing a visit to a particular region is very important, i know that many photographers go to Sintra because is very beautiful, but sometimes you need to take a rest and just look to your surroundings, and while you wait, its almost magical when all the pieces comes together in front of you, and just for a few moments you have the composition that you were expected all day.
