Chafariz dos Canos in Torres Vedras, is the biggest gothic fountain of this kind that survived to these days in Portugal.

Behind The Lens

Location
I have taken this photo during a night walk at the historic centre in my home town Torres Vedras.
Time
This photo was taken near midnight. It´s not an habit to take an night walk specially in the urban environment, but this was an exception, the city was decorated with Christmas lights and my family wanted to visit the historic centre to see them. I combined the opportunity to make a small detour to the Gothic monument and take the shoot.
Lighting
Since it was near midnight the only lights available were the street lamps and the monument illumination, this allowed me to give more depth of field to the image and capture the contrast between the smoothness of the water mirroring the textures of the monument.
Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 5D MK III with an EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens, to hold the camera in place i have used my Manfrotto BeFree tripod. No other equipment was involved.
Inspiration
This monument for architectonic reasons it is a bit "hidden" in the historic centre, it´s surrounded by much recent buildings and there aren´t many options to take an wide shot. In my mind i wanted to take advantage of the water on the ground an use it as an giant mirror. I have used the monument illuminations and the edges of the square as guiding lines, this pulls the viewers attention to the centre of the composition where the harshness of the textures in the stones contrasts with the smoothness of the water.
Editing
Usually i do some kind of processing in Lightroom. In this photo i had to correct the white balance giving it more blue and desaturating the yellow a bit, the original raw file was too yellowish because of the public illumination of the city. I used the lens correction to remove the 16mm lens distortion and have straight lines on the square, adjusted the shadows and the highlights, add some clarity at centre and to finish i gave a bit of vignetting on edge of the frame, this small change as added an bit more depth to the centre of the photo.
In my camera bag
In this night walk i was "light weighted" comparing to other occasions, in my bag i only had my Canon 5D Mk III with my Canon EF 24-105mm f/4l is usm, EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM, and my new tripod Manfrotto BeFree.
Feedback
I was going to do an night walk with my family at my home town, this time i already know the place. Sometimes enjoying the moment its what matters most. Visiting an already known place its always an good experience, because the light, the weather and even our own vision of the place changes with time, and we will discover something new. Depending of the place, when i visit a monument i try to explore extreme angles, in this photo case i couldn't be more happy with the final result, an simple composition of an historic place that once was the centre of the city.
