Location
I took this photo in my backyard during a fresh snow. Smokey Bear loves the snow so I take a lot of photos of him in it!Time
This was taken mid morning while the snow was nice and cold.Lighting
This was all natural lighting which keeps the shot looking exactly it was taken when it was.Equipment
I used a Nikon D40 with a Nikon DX 18-55 lens. This is actually my husband's camera and I was using it to compare to my Sony.Inspiration
Playing in the snow is a must for Smokey Bear, so action shots are usually the norm. I made him take a break so I could get some portraits of him in the snow. The pine tree limbs were full of snow making for a nice background and some of the falling snow was sticking to his fur adding to the whole look.Editing
I did some healing on the footprints I had left when I had walked up to him to pose him. I also sharpened this shot just a bit fr eye clarification and to bring up the snow on his fur.In my camera bag
I normally carry a Sony SLT-A65, 18-55 lens, wide angle, lens, macro lens, 2 filters, a 70-300 lens, a mono pod, an extra battery and an extra card.Feedback
Always consider your background and surroundings and use them to the betterment of the picture. Don't be afraid to get down on the ground with your subject or up above your subject. Don't always push for the "look at me/camera" pose; I captured his gaze towards the yard full time of snow awaiting him by not having him look at me. I also didn't force him to raise his head because his head on his paws was so much more of his feeling of uuuuggghhhh, fine, take my picture here! Posed and perfect captures are great but capturing the true emotion is fantastic!
