Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image at a Northern Saw-Whet Owl banding event at the Missouri River Bird Observatory's HQ in Arrow Rock State Park, Missouri. The MRBO is instrumental in gathering habitat and population information that is used by the state DNR, as well as in education.

Time

This was taken at about 11:OO pm. YAWN!!!! But that is when these little guys and gals are out doing their thing!

Lighting

This was taken in very low light in chicken coop in the middle of the night.

Equipment

Canon SX710 HS, no flash because of the owls sensitive eyes.

Inspiration

I just love birds and these small zen appearing owls are just about the cutest owls I have ever seen. It used to be believed that there was no population of this species in Missouri, but thirteen were captured and banded this evening, with over 50 individuals banded over a 3 week period. What an amazing experience. The people at the Missouri River Bird Observatory do an amazing job with education!

Editing

Some fill light was needed.

In my camera bag

I normally shoot with a Nikon D5100 but use the compact Canon SX710 HS also. I carry an assortment of Nikon lenses and filters as well as spare batteries and SD cards.

Feedback

Always be willing to try something new, even if it means staying up well past one's bedtime! If you enjoy bird photography, patience is a necessary virtue, as well as a bit of good luck!
