Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Port Isabel, Texas, just over the causeway from South Padre Island

Time

This was taken just after sunset on a November evening

Lighting

It was pretty dark when I shot this, I used a bridge railing as a makeshift tripod to steady the camera for the long exposure

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon 70D camera and Tamron 16-300mm lens. The camera was resting on a bridge railing to steady it for the night shot

Inspiration

I was out exploring while on a trip to South Padre and thought the boats made for an interesting shot

Editing

This is an older shot, I used Photoshop Elements to enhance colorsa a bit but not much else was done

In my camera bag

These days I normally carry a Canon 70D with a Tamron 16/300mm mounted, and a 5D Mk III with any number of lenses ranging from a 8mm diagonal fisheye to a Sigma 200-500mm telephoto depending on what I'll be shooting. I'm usually looking for cool things at random while traveling, so I often don't get to plan a lot of shots beforehand - I've found I spend the most time with various prime lenses and the 17-300mm Tamron though, the Tamron's range lets you capture almost anything on the fly and reduces the need for lens changes out in the open. There is a bit of barrel distortion, but nothing that Lightroom can't handle.

Feedback

These days I'd have taken the shot in RAW instead of JPG and would probably bracket a few exposures so I could better balance the light and dark areas
