Location
This photo was taken on Route 88 in Carson Pass, California just after the roads were opened. A big storm had passed through the area the day before closing the pass into Nevada.Time
We arrived in the area mid morning after making our way up the snow covered mountain roads from Sacramento. The photo was taken in mid-afternoon.Lighting
The cloud cover was still pretty thick after the big storm. It was completely overcast with some slight breaks in the clouds.Equipment
This photo was shot hand-held using a Canon AE-1 with a 50mm lens. I was shooting on Tri-X film (400 ASA/ISO).Inspiration
I was taking one of my first photography classes. We heard there was a big snow that had happened in the Sierra Nevada just a few days before so we drove up to get some images for my class portfolio.Editing
This image was shot on film and scanned from a black and white negative. In my camera bag
At time this photo was shot my camera was an AE-1 Program (35mm film). I had only 2 lenses, a 50mm 1.8 Canon and a 70-210 Vivitar Series 1. I had an old Velbon tripod that I carried with me.Feedback
I shot this series of photos from the road looking up into the mountains. I think the best advice I can give is to walk around as much as you can to get a good look at all the angles so you can see how the shadows fall. You're not going to be able to hike into big snow drifts like these. And there was an avalanche danger sign posted. So pay attention to where you are walking.
