Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home town of Rose City, Michigan. I was at the park down by the river waiting for a client. I got there early to get an idea of the shots I wanted to take and came across these unique mushrooms.

Time

It was early afternoon and I was walking around trying to find the best areas for my client's family photos when I found this grouping of mushrooms. I had never seen mushrooms like these before and I was compelled to capture that image in case I never found it again.

Lighting

Although it was daylight they were in the shade and very close to the ground. I needed to have more light and I wanted the pokadots to be seen clearly. I laid down on the ground and turned on my flash. I moved around and took a few before I got the shot I wanted. This photo highlights the unusual dots that I wanted to capture.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Canon Rebel T5 and an 18-55 lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this photograph came from the pokadots themselves. When I take a photograph for myself it is because of the story they tell at that moment in time. When I look closely at these the smaller mushrooms they have slightly raised dark areas, that are very close together, on an otherwise smooth surface. The bigger ones, or older ones, have the raised dark areas on ridges and are spaced farther apart. Like our children who grow from young to old, nature shows us their young and old.

Editing

No, I did not do any post-processing of this photograph. I believe that changing the photo would have taken away from the beauty I would like people to see.

In my camera bag

The first thing I like to pack in my bag is a Canon T5 body. I just like the function of it and it is easy to carry with me any where. I also pack my Canon 85mm. I love to be to capture the unexpected black and white portraits with this lens. The last lens I like to carry with me is my 300mm. This lens is great for being in stands and capturing those field moves.

Feedback

Lighting can quickly change depending on the clouds in the sky or the sun moving overhead. That can change the way a photograph will look. Take a few pictures with and without your flash or any extra lighting. Move around to get different angles, find the right story you want your photograph to tell people. Be patient and you will find the right time.
