Location
Colorado. We were between Coal Bank Pass and Molas Pass.Time
This photo was taken in two parts, the first with the sunset around 5 pm the second one with the Milky Way about 11pm.Lighting
This is about as pure a shot as there can be. I did not use anything for lightingEquipment
I used the Nikon D810 and the Sigma 20mm 1:4f. The tripod was a Manfrotto BefreeInspiration
This is one of my favorite places on earth. It is tremendously beautiful at all times of the year. It's easy to get a great picture, it's hard to get one that truly emphasizes the incredible creation that magnifies from every corner of this place.Editing
There is a bit of processing in most photos, this one took a little while. The hardest part was trying not to get the two skies to clash in color. The 2 raw photos had to be edited separately because they were so different in color and dynamics. Taking the edited raw photos I then could simply put the Sunset on top of the Milky Way and Subtract the parts of the sky that negatively affected the sunset. When all said and done it took nearly 3 hours to finish this photo. All editing was done in Lightroom and the stitching was done in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I always take three sigma lenses with me. My 20mm for those huge open frame shots like this one, my 20-70mm for a little zoom and my 70-200mm for close but not to close shots.Feedback
The hardest part of this shot was taking two identical shots. I wanted these to line up perfectly, and to do so I found 3 large rocks and set them on the interior of my tripod legs. When I cam back several hours later the rocks were still there and I was able to realign my tripod exactly where it was.
