Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph is taken on the Vatnsnes peninsula in North-West Iceland

Time

The photo is taken around noon. This location is very different depending on the light and tide so I'll definitely be visiting again at high tide and at dusk/dawn.

Lighting

Lighting conditions were perfect. Not a single cloud in the sky and the sun was positioned so that it didn't distract the shot in any way. The sun was high in the air which helped make the reflection stand out in the sand.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D600 and a 28-300mm Nikkor lens.

Inspiration

I had seen many images of this place and I had wanted to visit the location for such a long time! I found the perfect opportunity while travelling up north. The location is not exactly on route, but I definitely don't regret making the detour to capture this photograph.

Editing

I originally shot the photo in color, but I wanted to make it monochrome right from the start to give the image a timeless fine-art appeal. I also felt a mono made the reflection of the monolith in the sand stand out better.

In my camera bag

It depends on the purpose of my travels. I love to limit my self to one lens to push my creativity, so most of the time if I'm just going for a walk, I'll carry my Nikon D600 and a 50mm f/1.4 lens. However, if I'm travelling out in nature or abroad I want to have the possibility of wide angle shots. Since I don't own a lot of gear, that means carrying my heavy (but versatile) 28-300mm lens. While doing landscapes I of course bring a long a sturdy tripod in my camera bag and a trigger remote..

Feedback

Don't hesitate to take a little detour to get to that perfect location. It usually worth it!
