This little fella didn't mind posing for a couple of close ups. In fact he seemed acustomed to the strange looking creatures that hovered over him to get that perfect photo.

The Arctic Puffin or "Lundi" is one of the most common birds in Iceland although it can only be found at certain locations. This one recided at Látrabjarg in the Westfjords, a "must-visit" location in Iceland.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo is taken in the Westfjords of Iceland, specifically in a place called Latrabjarg which offers steep cliffs and amazing views of the ocean. The location is well known for its birdlife.

Time

My group and I had an early rise since we had to travel quite far from our base camp to this location. We drove several hours and reached our destination at Latrabjarg sometime around late-noon.

Lighting

The cliffs at Latrabjarg face south-west so timing our arrival around late noon was crucial to get crisp natural light with limited shadows.

Equipment

For this occasion I used my Nikon D600 and a Tamron 150-600mm shot at 600mm.

Inspiration

I love the puffin bird. It has such a friendly expression. I knew that getting in close would allow me to capture an unique portrait.

Editing

I normally do a little bit of post processing when photographing wildlife. I specifically like to draw out the texture and contrast of the feathers of birds.

In my camera bag

My go to lens is the Nikon 50mm 1.4f but on this occasion I had to be able to get a lot closer. When photographing wildlife I therefore carry my Tamron 150-600mm.
