Location
This photo was taken in on the shore of Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta, CanadaTime
We were wandering the park to various locations in early spring and this was later in the day, late afternoon.Lighting
Just a cloudy dreary day that at first I found very uninspiring.Equipment
Nikon D800 with a 14.0-24.0 mm f/2.8 Lens on a tripod as I always bracket Settings were: ƒ/5.6 14.0 mm 1/500 second ISO at 400Inspiration
This shot almost never happened. I had different expectations when I arrived at the lake. We started to wander a round and I was hoping to see more of the beautiful emerald greens that the water usually has to offer but with the overcast skies the water just wasn't popping as I had hoped. The sky was on the verge of a storm when I found these boats, if they hadn't of been there I may not have even taken a shot but they inspired me to.Editing
There is some use of HDR in this but I tried to keep it fairly subtle. I was just trying to bring some pop to the textures in the boats and some drama into the clouds. When I DO use HDR techniques (which isn't all that often), I start by blending the bracketed shots, then tweak my colors and contrast etc in Lightroom. In my camera bag
My main camera is my Nikon D800. To make use of the full frame body I carry my Nikon Holy Trinity of lenses always. The 14-24mm f/2.8, The 24-70mm f/2.8 and the 70-200mm f/2.8. I also carry a 85mm f/1.8 and a 50mm f/1.4 for portraits etc. I keep my tripod close at all times and even a couple of speed-lights for some off camera flash if I happen to need, triggered by cheap but reliable "ebay triggers".Feedback
Jasper is a beautiful park. There is much more to see than what you can visit in a few days or simply drive too. Plan to have lots of time if you're going to visit. Another thing I learned from this shot is to not limit yourself to your expectations, to go exploring regardless of the weather and shoot what you see. I wasn't impressed at all with the day until I approached editing this shot with a clear frame of mind. It turned out to be one of my faves.
