Location
I took this photo of the Manhattan skyline from Brooklyn Bridge Park. At parts of the promenade you can see the remnants of former piers. The wooden columns make a great foreground to the skyline.Time
I took the photo in the evening at the later part of blue hour. The blue hour is kind of my favorite time of the day for photography, especially cities because at this time of the day, the lights from all the buildings and the streets turn on but you still have enough natural light for a nice sky.Lighting
For this photo I took an exposure of totally 30s. This long exposure makes the sky with the moving clouds very soft and also the water is smoothed. This soft parts of the photo work well with the parts of the buildings with a lot of details in it.Equipment
I use a Canon 5d Mark II Camera with the EF 16-35 mm f4 lens. I had no tripod with me, so I had to use the stones at the shore to place my camera on.Inspiration
I saw a lot of photos from New York skyline with this wooden columns in the foreground before I went finally to New York and therefore it was clear to me that I have to go to this spot. Next to making a good photo sujet you will find there a fantastic view of the city and the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge.Editing
I do all the post-processing with Camera Raw in Photoshop. For this photo I decided to make a black and white processing as I was not very satisfied with the colored version. The black and white has a very light blue tone over it which fits quite well to the theme of the city skyline. In my camera bag
I always take my Canon 5d Mark II and the EF 16-35 mm f4 with me. It is my absolute favorite lens and I like it for city photography as well as landscapes because of the wide angle and its sharpness. Aditionally to the lens I use diverse neutral density and polar filters to control reflections and the effects of long exposures. And of course a tripod belongs to my basic equipment.Feedback
At this kind of spots you are confronted with a lot of things happening at the sime time, for example different boats and ships passing by, sometimes people and in the sky airplanes. All of these things leave there traces in the final pictures, especially with long exposures as this one. So to control every part of the image I always take several exposures so that I have every part of the image exactly like I want it.
