I love how I was able to capture the salt mid-fall onto the pile. I used the Himalayan Pink salt for this to give a sense of texture...also it is what I had in the cabinet...The process for getting this shot was deceptively difficult. Tell ya what, if this ever gets featured, I'll tell ya how I did it.
EDIT: This got featured, so I guess I gotta tell you now huh? It's been so long since I took the picture but I think the following is how I did it:
Black foamcore background, all the ambient lights off. camera settings as shown on this photograph's metadata (available somewhere in here), speed light, fast as heck shutter speed. The camera set up on a tripod. I MIGHT have had some fill lights set to low, but I don't remember.
Before pouring the salt, I prefocused the lens where the salt would (ideally) be falling. I had it set to manual so it wouldn't change focus in the dark. Start pouring where the camera is focused and trigger the shutter. I didn't have a remote shutter at the time so I poured with one hand and the other pressed the shutter on the camera. Naturally this would subtly change the location of the camera and mess up focus. Many attempts were made before I gave up. this one was the best, but certainly not as perfect as I was going for.
