Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the Arches National Park in Utah.

Time

This was taken at sunset as we were on our way out.

Lighting

I think this is a photo that only works because it is a silhouette with a multicolored sky in the background, so the tree is largely backlit. There is just enough front lighting to see some details in the foreground and that increases interest in the foreground without detracting from the shape of the tree against the colorful sky.

Equipment

This was taken on a Canon EOS70D, and a tripod; however, I have forgotten which lens I used.

Inspiration

Sunsets with complex shapes as silhouettes just tickle my brain a bit. That's as deep as it goes.

Editing

I shoot all my photos in flat raw, so this was color mastered to as close to real life as I could get it. I then slightly increased the saturation and sharpness of the photo to bring out the sunset a little.

In my camera bag

I always have my camera body (Canon EOS90D now), my Canon 50mm prime, my Canon 100mm prime macro, my Canon 55-200mm lens, my speed light flash (I just have a cheap Neewer right now), lens cleaning kit, extra batteries for camera and flash, my (actually horrible) tripod hanging off the back of the bag. I occasionally add my wide angle lens to the bag if I know I'll need it, sometimes I'll take out the 55-200mm lens at the same time.

Feedback

This was taken in a hot desert. Please bring water with you. This tree is right next to a picnic spot and the road, but please don't get heat stroke or dehydrated. As far as actual technique, there's not much to say. Face the setting sun with the subject in front of you. Be mindful of your height and angle, and don't blind yourself.
