Love this spot. Each time throws up something different and new. Always calls for long exposures though!

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured at The Marengo rock shelf just outside of Apollo Bay on the Great Ocean road in Victoria Australia.

Time

I have Photographed the rock shelf several times at different times of the day but late afternoon always gives the best results there. Fortunatley when i captured this image i was on a family weekend away that had us staying just a couple of minutes walk from this spot,

Lighting

I dont live close to this location but whenever i am in the area i always like to stop by to check out how it looks on that particular day. Most times i have stopped here it always seems to be sunny with little to no cloud. I always knew that if i could capture this location on a gloomy day with the tide just right i would be able to create a very moody image. Fortunatley on this one day when i arrived i knew everything was going to fall into place. I just had to work fast as the light faded and the tide changed.

Equipment

The image was shot on a canon 5d mkII with a 24-105 mm L lens. The camera was sitting on top of my trusty manfrotto 190xb tripod and i used a remote and a screw in nd 1000 filter. I have since switched to the nisi drop in filters as they are so much quicker and easier to switch between.

Inspiration

Its a rough little spot that has easy access just off the famous Great Ocean road in Victoria Australia. So much of the Great Ocean Road has been famously photographed and any time i visit along the road I like to try and find less well known and less photographed spots so i can really capture my own piece of such a famous area.

Editing

I often shy away from a lot of post processing but this image did receive more than i might normally do. The image was first touched up in light room as i generally always do just to get the balance right. It was then sent to Photoshop where i used the Totally Rad software to really boost that moody glow to the image. Also a vignette was added to really help focus the centre of the image.

In my camera bag

It really depends on what I am planning to shoot. I like to travel light and tend to only really pack the essentials for that particular day. With that being said to go out and shoot landscape as above i would pack the canon 5dmkii (i love these cameras) my 16-35mm f4.0 L lens with the Nisi circular polariser always attached to the end. A lens cleaning kit is always a priority for my bag as sea spray and any other water can really ruin an image! My nisi V5 filter holder and the 6 stop and 10 stop nd filters always come along for the ride. I also carry a soft and hard grad filter for those tricky situations that requite a little more filter magic. A spare battery and spare cards generally round out my bag for the day.

Feedback

As with any outdoor photography you can not control the weather conditions. If you live close to a location it is easy to travel out and shoot that location in many different weather situations. If like myself you need to capture something on a short stay be prepared to shoot in what ever conditions you are confronted with. I have shot the Marengo rock shelf at least a dozen times from day break to sunset in all kinds of varying weather and tide conditions. Be prepared to be disappointed but most of all just be prepared. You just never know when you will get that one shot you set out to get. Or perhaps you get a shot that outweighs all your expectations because you just got that little bit of luck.
