Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on our rural property in the Whitsundays, Australia.

Time

I remember noticing the glow on the grass every afternoon for a few days, and decided to try a portrait in the grass in the late afternoon. Both the grass and my daughters hair caught a lovely pinkish- gold glow from the setting sun.

Lighting

I love backlighting, with the sun shining through someones hair or clothing, so a setting sun is great for that. I also love to turn the models face into the setting sun to get a nice glow on the skin. I probably wish with this photo that I had turned her face toward the glow a bit more, to introduce more gold to her skin tones.

Equipment

I used my trusty Nikon D3100, and a 55-300mm lens, the focus length was 55mm 1/250 sec @ f4.5, ISO 280.

Inspiration

I was very much inspired by the surreal glow on the grass in the days previous. I am always looking around me for settings that would look good with one of my little models in them. At the moment we have a lot of corn ready for harvest so stay tuned for corn photos!

Editing

I adjusted the shadows and highlights with lightroom. With her facing away from the light source her face was definitely too much in shadow. I lightened her face up and turned down the highlights in the background behind my model.

In my camera bag

Just my Nikon D3100, My 55-300mm zoom lens and my 35mm prime lens, as well as the basic 18-55mm. I always carry spare SD cards, because I often run out of space, and have had a few fail on me over time. If I am shooting people, I will carry a silver reflector to bounce light around.

Feedback

Keep your eye open for beautiful light, especially in the late afternoon. All you may need as a background is something as simple as an overgrown patch of grass. Organise a cute model with a big smile and appropriate clothing, then stand back and snap away. I love the way photography opens your eyes to your surroundings and you start to see possibilities all around you, especially in nature. My children inspired me to start improving my photography just a couple of years ago and it has become a wonderful obsession. Photography really makes you conscious of all the beauty in the world, especially in my family.
