Just west of Housesteads Fort on Hadrian's Wall is Milecastle 37. The archway was reconstructed and suggests that at this point the wall could have been anywhere from 12 to 15 feet in height. Located on the Whin Sill, a volcanic ridge, the gateway opens to an insurmountable drop. Clearly realizing the gate lacked utility it was later narrowed.
