I was working with a textile designer who had been involved in a project known as "Rural Murals", where she had teamed up with another artist to paint the side of a building int he countryside. We wanted to do a shoot with a model wearing a skirt with her designs, set against the backdrop of the mural she had helped to create. I decided to do a night time shoot so I could use a single-source spotlight to cast strong shadows on the wall, and give the whole thing an edgier feel.

This photo was one of a number taken for a fashion shoot in front of a barn in SW Scotland that had been painted as part of a "Rural Mural" project.Time
It was shot late in the evening when the sun had gone down as I wanted to be able to control the lighting.Lighting
For the shoot I wanted a single spotlight effect to give it a slightly more edgy attitude, and to ensure there would be strong shadows cast against the brightly coloured wall.Equipment
I used a handheld Canon 7D Mk2 with a Canon 10-22mm wide-angle lens. Lighting was a single Canon 600 EX-RT SpeedliteInspiration
Morag Macpherson is a textile designer, but had been involved in painting of the barn as part of the Rural Mural project. We decided it would be cool to shoot some models wearing clothing with her designs against the backdrop of the mural. We worked with 2 different models we knew, and I brought on board the owner of Basement 20 hair salon, who brought another hairdresser and makeup artist with him. With a whole team of people I thought it would be fun to video it, so I called in a couple of friends to help out. The result is a fun 2 min behind-the-scenes video of the shoot, which you can find on YouTube here - https://youtu.be/Q7hyTkRdt9EEditing
Very little other than cropping and contrast tweaksIn my camera bag
A Canon 7D mk2 is my main camera. The 3 lenses I use most are my Canon f/2.8 24-70mm, which is pretty much my workhorse lens; a Canon f/2.8 70-200mm which is fantastic for shooting live performances - getting in close in low light conditions; and finally a wide angle Canon 10-22mm for when I need to take in a lot in a small space. I also usually have 2 or 3 Canon speedlights to hand and an assortment of softboxes and modifiers.Feedback
The main advice I'd have for an evening shoot like this is to keep an eye on the temperature and make sure you have plenty of warm drinks and coats to hand. Nothing will make you more loved than producing flasks of tea and coffee with some home made baking half way through the shoot :)
