Location
My photo was taken inside the round tower of the napoleonic era fortifications in Old Portsmouth in the south of EnglandTime
Myself and a friend took one of our regular nighttime trips out to light paint. This one was about 9 in the evening. There were still a few sightseers around as the local area was lit up for Christmas. We had to time our efforts carefully.Lighting
The idea behind the shot was to get the wire wool sparks cascading down the narrow staircase, I decided to light the window recesses at the last minute to fill a gap in the lighting on that half of the chamber.Equipment
On that night I was using my Canon 70d with a 24-105mm f/4L lens. All mounted on my manfrotto tripod with ball head. The lighting was simply wirewool for the stairway and a couple of coloured LED lanterns for the window recesses.Inspiration
I'm always on the lookout for new places to shoot or old places to shoot in new ways, this was one of those. I just knew the narrow stone stairs and chambers of the fortifications would look great lit properly at night.Editing
Simple processing here, crop, contrast and levels, sharpen. In my camera bag
I now carry my Canon 5d mk3 mostly with 24-105mm f/4L and 70-200mm f/2.8L lenses.10 and 4 stop Hoya ND screw on filters, cable release, Hoya polariser. Spare memory and batteries. That's about it. I have other lens and flash guns but only take those out when I know I'll need them.Feedback
Find a spot you know well in the daytime for your first goes at nighttime shooting that way you'll know your way around and have a good idea of the best places to set up. Then experiment away. Light painting isn't always an exact science. Sometimes you'll surprise yourself. Take the time to get the right equipment to ensure when you're spinning wirewool you know it's going to stay put and not all fly off in one direction the first spin.
