On my pre-extension in France, we stayed in Saint Malo and old walled city in Brittany. It was 80% destroyed in WWII, but the city within the walls was rebuilt like it was brick by brick.

We had a break in the rain so we walked the town wall which gave us fantastic views inside and outside the walls. Here is one view of the harbor.
