Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on my drive through Montana De Oro State Park. I am just like everyone one else in this world. I am a human being who once they got a chance to pick up a camera, they decided to never put it down.

Time

The day was late morning, early afternoon. I was just sitting in my apartment on campus as I watch the rain come down, but as I sat there was a moment when it just stopped. When I saw that moment I grabbed my camera, got my bag, and ran right out the door. As I ran to my car, I just kept thinking of where to go, what should I photograph, what would look awesome. I still couldn't put my finger on it, so I got in my car and just started driving following the clouds. As I did that it just hit me and I knew where to go. That is when I started my voyage to Montana De Oro State Park.

Lighting

The image I tried to capture was the integration of human expansion through mother nature. For where the photo was taken and what I tried capturing I used all natural light, but I waited for when the clouds completely covered the sky giving it more of a gray feel. I did this so the viewer would be more focused on the trees, but also to get the feel of cloudy, rainy day.

Equipment

I used my Nikon d7100 camera with a Nikkor 17-55mm 1:2.8G lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

What inspired me to capture this image was I wanted the image to resemble one's life. An image that shows life and how it is never ending. That although we may think we see the road ahead of us, we never truly know reach it or know where it goes. In life we encounter may roads that lead to a door or path that we must decide to take. When we decided to open that door or go on that path it just opens another and another leaving us with never ending possibilities. But along that road are memories, beauty, life and that is what the trees represent in this image. Each tree is a journey, an experience, an adventure, that you encounter on the way to the end of the road. The end of life itself.

Editing

I did all my post editing in Lightroom CC. My post editing was essentially focused on bringing the image life and bring color to the trees. I enhanced the vibrance and saturation of the image as a whole and then took on each color separately. I also edited exposure, contrast, shadows, highlights, blacks, and clarity to get the look the image truly deserved.

In my camera bag

My bag is very simple compared to most elite or advanced photographers. I carry my MacBook Pro for quick on the go editing, my Nikon d7100 camera with a Nikkor 17-55mm 1:2.8G lens, a lens cleaning kit, and a 3 legged thing tripod. I carry also this in the beautifully designed peak design messenger bag.

Feedback

My tip to any photographer is to never leave home without your camera. It may be heavy and annoying to carry, but you will regret not having it over getting the image. I say this because life is very unpredictable, so you can not plan for when the photo opp will be there, you can just be prepared for it. In the terms of capturing an image similar to this is as you drive, I would say to look at the environment around you. Nowadays people focus so much on where they have to be and what their destination is, that they tend to miss the little things and beauty that is along the way.
