Location
This photo was taken in Yellowstone National Park this march. I had an opportunity through work to go to Montana, when the job was over I stuck around for a few days, rented a cabin and explored Yellowstone on my own.Time
This was taken around 3:00 in the afternoon, I was driving from Mammoth Hot Springs towards Lamar Valley when I saw this group of Bison on the top of this hill, the snow was starting to pick up, I parked the car on the side of the road and slowly worked my way towards them.Lighting
This was all natural lighting obviously, it was extremely overcast and there was snow coming down.Equipment
I shot this on my 5D mk III, I had the 70-200 f2.8 lens with the 2x extender on it, no tripod or monopod, I was working very run and gun.Inspiration
Yellowstone was always somewhere I wanted to go and when I had the opportunity I took it. I knew before I even arrived that I wanted a photo of a bison looking dead into the camera with snow coming down around him, was very lucky that I was able to take exactly that photo, especially since my subject was a large wild animal.Editing
I did some post work in lightroom, I upped the clarity and the contrast. I did not have to do a whole lot to make this photo stand out as one of my favorite photos I've ever taken. In my camera bag
I normally have my 5D mk III, the 70-200 f2.8, a 24-105 f4, a 50mm f1.4 prime, a 35mm f1.4 prime, a 12mm f2.8 fisheye lens, a 2x extender, and the Canon 430 EX III flash.Feedback
To get a picture similar to this first off you have to be a remote place like Yelowstone. Patience is key, I encountered several herds of bison before this one and none of them would allow me to get close enough. Having a long enough lens helps, I had a 70-200 with a 2x extender on to be able to get this shot.
