Took this photo at our AUV car parked outside the house. It was a big coincidence that my mom found this beautiful grasshopper resting on top of it. It was funny remembering how she shouted that I must see this beautiful grasshopper. I was in awe when I saw it. Excitedly grabbed my stuff and shot this in every angle possible before it jumps away.Time
This was taken early in the morning at about 8:30 am. I just I can remember how my mom excitedly shouted to take this photo as fast as I can before the grasshopper decides to jump again. After a while, I ran in panic to get a stool because I can't get the angle I was looking for. It was a funny, adrenaline-packed morning for me.Lighting
The lighting was nothing complicated. I just used natural light but I was lucky that our car was parked at a shaded are which lessened any possible harsh light that might hit the subject. The highlight on the grasshopper's body was just reflected light from the clouds.Equipment
I used Canon 7D with 100mm macro lens for this shot. Also used a stool so i can adjust my shooting angle but aside from that, nothing more.Inspiration
The grasshopper being there was just a coincidence. The moment I saw it, I immediately ran to my room and grabbed my camera bag to take its shot. I don't want to lose the moment where I actually saw a good-looking grasshopper modelling for me. Plus, I really love how simple and fresh this creature looked like. Maybe that is why I took this shot.Editing
It didn't require a lot of post-processing. I'm still studying how to properly use Lightroom so I just adjusted the brightness for a bit and added clarity. I also cropped a bit at the right so the subject looks more in center.In my camera bag
I always pack my 2nd hand Canon 7D body and 50mm 1.8 prime wherever i go. Literally wherever. If I'd be climbing mountains or watching live gigs, I'll just include an 18-55mm kitlens (temporarily lent by a friend). If I'll be shooting on a studio or macro (nature or object details), I would bring my 100mm macro lens instead of kitlens.Feedback
Whenever you see an interesting subject or thought of a good theme, just shoot away and milk it in every possible way. It may sound spontaneous but I think the good thing about it is you can capture something raw, fresh, and unexpected. It is like communicating life and reality as is - may it be humans, animals or objects. Plus, make it simple especially when choosing or searching for a background. I'm no expert but for this shot, i think it worked. Hahaha! Oh! And like what my previous photography instructor said, never cease to seek good lighting. It will literally make or break any shot. I am still an amateur in photography so I kind of seize the capacity of everything I own and know so far. I still need more practice but I am having so much fun along the way and I think it's one of the important things we should remember.
