Location
This photo is a composite of two photos taken just a few minutes apart behind the Crab Trap restaurant on Okaloosa Island, Fort Walton Beach, Florida.Time
It was in early February at about 6:15 in the morning.Lighting
Looking east, the sky at that hour was brilliant orange but looking west at the Lifeguard Station the sky was a bland blue.Equipment
Nikon D810 and this was the first outing that I made with it after getting it a few days earlier. I used the lens that came with the camera, a 24-120 f/4 zoom. ISO was 100 at f/4. It was handheld.Inspiration
I really liked the way the Lifeguard Station looked in the morning sun but when I got home and saw how bland it looked on the computer I decided to see if I could make a more compelling image as a composite and bring out the reds.Editing
Of course the post-processing is what, in my opinion, makes the image what it is. Shot an image of the sunrise and using the sky from the east facing image to replace the sky from the west facing image really made this much more dramatic than it was. I also increased the red HSL and brought up the HDR so as to make the sand and clouds pop like like they do. I also brought up the green HSL so that the lights at the bar stood out as well.In my camera bag
I have a Nikon D810, with a AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR, AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED, AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G, and a SB-910.Feedback
Imagination, use it. I was surprised at the outcome of this image once I used my imagination to "picture" a better picture than what I had originally shot. Not all images are "perfect" right out of the camera so experiment with post-processing. It is great when you do get that perfect shot but the reality, for me anyway, is that they are more than likely going to need a little love later. This image was a great learning experience for me!
