It was an early morning shot.Lighting
Shortly after sunrise when the light was just hitting the top the trees.Equipment
Nikon D810 with Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6. Lens was set at 500mm, ISO 400 @f/5.6 and a shutter speed of 1/1000s.Inspiration
This shot was part of a series I was taking as the Heron on the left was flying with nesting material in its beak. This one was captured just as it was landing in the tree top.Editing
I only cropped the image. Other than that it is straight out of the camera! In my camera bag
Too much... Seriously, I am beginning to rethink how much gear I take with me. When I know that I am going to shoot wildlife I am going to just take the long glass, AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR, and MAYBE one other lens, such as my AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR. If it is landscape I am planning then it is the IRIX 15mm f/2.4 Firefly and my nifty 50, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G! Insects and reptiles calls for AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED 105mm for the macro. Just walking around and shooting with no plan, the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR (I really love this lens!)Feedback
This is one of those shots that seldom come along an when they do, WOW! If you hope to capture these kinds of images, compose back to front when you think that something may happen and then patiently wait for the action to arrive. Do not be afraid to shoot continuous. At only 5 frames a second I was lucky because if I had not already had the basic image composed I doubt that I would have caught what you see and if I had hoped to time it, well I seriously doubt it would have turned out as well. The only thing that I feel would have made it better is if the eyes were tack sharp but hey, it still turned out better than I could have imagined.
