Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken beside the parking lot of LaSalle Marina, Burlington, Ontario. LaSalle marina is in Hamilton Bay at the west end of Lake Ontario and is a great area for birds, as well as being a holding area during migration periods.
Time
The photo was taken at 10:50am on a hazy cold December morning. I often go to LaSalle during the winter months to see what may be in a holding pattern, usually Tundra and Trumpeter Swans depending on weather. It was a particularly cold and windy day so not much was happening.
Lighting
As mentioned above the sky was hazy, but of the softer variety, not harsh. The tree which held the Screech Owl was back lit by the sun but wide enough to block any major glaring or flaring.
Equipment
I took the shot with a Canon EOS 7D, f/5.6, 1/60, 250mm hand held. The shot was relatively close with the Owl approx. 8 feet up in the tree, and 5 feet away from my position. The bird was quite docile and probably used to having people walking around its location. The bird had been sighted many times before, and I had already taken other photos of it in near by locations.
Inspiration
The inspiration initially was to photograph some of the larger Swans in the water and flight, but changed as I took advantage of a 'found' situation. I am a birder so luckily for me I am always looking into the trees for such opportunities.
Editing
The major post-processing was cropping, to encase the Owl in the tree trunk, avoiding any possibility of flaring coming from around the back li tree. Some minor adjustments were made to highlighting, saturation and clarity.
In my camera bag
I just purchased the 7D last November and have since built up my 'bag'. I now carry a Canon EFS 10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM, a Canon EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, a Canon EFS 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II, (or a Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS depending on need)
Feedback
The biggest advice for any photography work is proper preparation, but even more so with bird or wild life photography. Knowing the habitat and habits of that which you are looking to photograph is key; but also the readiness to accept what is offered even if not planned. As it has often been said, " If you can't be good...be lucky".
