Behind The Lens

Location

I took this Photo In Algonquin Provincial Park, in Ontario, Canada. A favorite place to go for photography trips any time of the year . The cabin was located on the Northern shore of Smoke Lake in a small cove just off Highway 60.

Time

The Photo was taken in October, 2015 early in the morning, before the sun had risen in the sky. It was a cool fall morning and there was a crispness in the air. It was almost like those still crisp morning of winter.

Lighting

I wanted to express the complete and utter feelings of serenity and solitude that the moment provided to me. A slight mist was beginning to rise off the lake in the middle which helped to mute the light to a softness but did not reduce the general overall lighting. The softness of the light produced allowed for the reflection of the cabin to be present on the still lake but in a muted form.

Equipment

This shot was taken by a Canon Powershot SX50 at f/8, 1/50th shutter speed and 200 ISO and was set on a tripod.

Inspiration

I had taken photos of this cove and cabin in past trips to Algonquin, but this morning set of those feelings of serenity and solitude which needed to be captured. From past trips to Algonquin, I realized how quickly a shot like this can disappear, I worked fast to take the shot.

Editing

I used a bit of clarity to sharpen the cabin's appearance while not adding enough to change the cabin's reflection. I also darken the photo a bit to bring out the richness and depth of the colours.

In my camera bag

At the time of the photo, all I carried was the SX50 and a few filters. Now a days, I use a Canon EOS 7D. In my bag, I now carry a Canon EFS 10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM, a Canon EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, a Canon EFS 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II, (or a Canon EFS 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS depending on need) Recently I added a Canon 10-18mm wide angle lens.

Feedback

The biggest advice for any photography work is proper preparation, especially in a park the size of Algonquin. The range of habitat and mini- climates found here can make it dicey shoot. But with the proper preparation of equipment and attire, a good shoot is almost guaranteed.
