Location
This photo was taken along a rural road just behind a Mennonite school just outside of Kitchener, Ontario where I live. The fence ran along the hills that the school backed onto. The country side was covered in a good foot of snow, with the snow deeper in the valleys between the hills.Time
The photo was taken just at noon, on a very cold crisp day. The snow had finished falling for the day but the sun was still hidden behind the clouds creating a bright haze. Being that it was noon, the light that did emerge from the clouds was high in the sky at a slight angle behind the scene causing little in the way of shadow.Lighting
The haze and the fresh snow caused the scene be to stark and harsh which caught my attention along with the path of the fence as it appeared and disappeared from view by the snow covered hills backed by the two trees. The light through strong and harsh produced very subtle shadows from the trees and fence, adding to the starkness. As stated above, the light was harsh due to the fresh snow and haze from the clouds, the tree and fence was dark. All in all, it was close to being a natural occurring black and white scene with stark contrasts.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Canon SX50 HS. f/5.0 1/1250 33mm ISO 200. Hand held as shutter speed was not a worry.Inspiration
I have always been intrigued by the way light and shadow play off each other. Here due to the bleakness of the scene, the contrasts were quite evident. It was a fairly minimalist setting, snow. hills, trees and fence which heightened that play. The photo has an unseen diagonal running through the photo allowing the contrasts to play out, with the upper left holding shadow(darkness) and form opposed to the lower right having light(snow) and stark emptiness.Editing
There was some processing of the highlights and contrast, softening the highlights some, so that the subtle shadows were slightly more evident. I did a crop adjustment condensing the area of play somewhat while removing some unwanted edge distractions. In my camera bag
I just purchased the 7D last November and have since built up my 'bag'. I now carry a Canon EFS 10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM, a Canon EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, a Canon EFS 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II, (or a Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS depending on need) . I also carry a Tiffen variable ND and a Tiffen cir Polarizer.Feedback
Any winter scene has the obvious, dress for the weather, look in the unusual places, and be prepared to find things in unexpected places. Try to get out while the snow has that fresh crisp look, be it early before a melt, after a fresh freeze or wind scrapping. And as always watch for the play between light and shadow, which snow allows to materialize more often.
