Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken along the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper in the early 1980's. I saw the elk in the water and pulled over so that I could get out my camera and capture the image.Time
Late morning, close to middayLighting
The photo was taken in natural light.Equipment
I grabbed my Nikon FE camera (film), which probably had a third-party telephoto lens mounted on it.Inspiration
It was very opportunistic. I had never seen elk in the wild, and had no idea if a similar scene would ever again present itself.Editing
Some years ago, I scanned the negative at 3000 dpi, and then used Photoshop Elements to clean up the scanned image, trying to keep the digital image as close as possible to the original photo print. In my camera bag
I went digital about 20 years ago with some of the early low resolution digital cameras, and have gradually improved my equipment. Today, when I go out to shoot around the city, I usually carry a Sony Alpha A7 III with a Sony FE 24-105 lens mounted on the camera and a Sony FE 16-35 lens and extra batteries in the bag. I also bring along a Sony RX100 VI and, of course, my smartphone.Feedback
Patience is a virtue, but sometimes you just get lucky. You can capture great images in many different ways, so always be ready. For me, the equipment is much less important than being in the right place at the right time.
