Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from the cliff overlooking the water's edge in Oia, a small town on the Greek island of Santorini, in 2014. I was all ready with my camera when the sailing slip entered the sunlit area.

Time

Sunset - about 8:20pm on June 18, 2014, just a few days before the Summer Solstice

Lighting

Natural lighting

Equipment

Sony NEX-7 Mirrorless with a Tamron 18-200mm/F3.5-6.3 zoom

Inspiration

That location was recommended to me as the best place to photograph the sunset, so I was there among about a hundred others. I like to take sunset photos when I travel around the world.

Editing

Not much.

In my camera bag

I have recently tried to lighten up on what I carry. I have an old (2014) Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS40 with a 30x zoom that goes almost everywhere, even though its optics are not up to the quality of better cameras. If I capture the shot I want, then I can fix it in post-processing. I also have a Sony DSC-RX100 M6, which has a better sensor. Then I also bring a mirrorless full-frame camera - a Sony Alpha A7M3, usually with a Sony FE 24-105mm F/4 G lens or a Sony FE 16–35 mm F4 ZA OSS. For quick shots, I have a Samsung Galaxy S21 mobile phone that works surprisingly well.

Feedback

Being in the right place at the right time is usually much more important than the details of your equipment. Without the opportunity to take a photo, you can't take a good one.
