Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken inside of a restaurant called Fat Rosie's in Frankfort, IL.

Time

We took this image around 6pm in the winter, so the sun had already set.

Lighting

This image was lit by the interior lighting of the restaurant, we were very lucky because it was a well lit room.

Equipment

For this photo, I used my Nikon D600 with my 50mm lens. We did not use any strobe lighting and the camera was handheld.

Inspiration

My model and I were experimenting with low light photography. We were using the lights from storefronts and streetlights as our main sources of light. While we were at this strip mall, some of the employees offered to let us come inside to take photo and warm up. Once we walked in, I noticed that they had a window inside of their entrance that looked in on a table, we just knew we had to take her photograph in the window.

Editing

I used Adobe Photoshop to enhance this image. First, I did some exposure and contrast editing, then I did skin retouching, dodging, burning, sharpening, and then making the image black and white.

In my camera bag

I always have my camera, 50mm lens, a wide angle lens, and extra batteries!

Feedback

To get an image like this, find a room that has a lot of bold colors or a variety of colors with enough light for your subject. Part of what made this such a great black and white image was the fact that the room was mismatched in colors and was very vibrant, so we were able to capture a variety of midtones. It's also important to focus on your dodging and burning for an image like this, I focused on enhancing the natural highlights and shadows instead of trying to create them in post. It's all about finding the light right first.
