Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Chew Valley Lakes in Somerset

Time

Around midday

Lighting

Very bright and sunny, a little harsh, but I felt it underlined the unusual sight of an owl in broad daylight.

Equipment

Nikon D5100 with 55-300mm Nikkor telephoto lens.

Inspiration

I just love owls and the plumage of the barn owl is particularly fine, especially when seen in daylight

Editing

Some cropping and contrast adjustment

In my camera bag

I always carry my Nikon D5100 whenever I can, usually with the 55-300mm telephoto lens, although if I can't manage that, I take a little Olympus TG-1 which is easy to carry, good for macro and also waterproof so great in the English weather!! I never venture out without spare batteries and SD cards. I also sometimes carry a Nikon J2 with 10-30mm lens which is good for wider-angle shots and compact for holidays. I do have filters, tripod and monopod but because I have arthritis and spinal problems, tend to keep my kit to a minimum

Feedback

Be ready for the unexpected! I didn't know I'd get the opportunity to photograph this beautiful bird, especially so close, so I had to grab the moment.
