Location
This was taken at a friend's house, her son had this gorgeous little puppy and wanted some photos. We had been playing with Frankie and eventually she got tired so that seemed a good opportunity to catch a cute picture of her sleeping.Time
Mid afternoon, after an hour or so of playing with the puppy and watching her interact with toys and her ownersLighting
Taken indoors on quite a dull day with not very good indoor lighting, which made it a bit challenging!Equipment
Nikon D5100 with Nikkor 55-300mm telephoto lens. No tripod, flash or filtersInspiration
Although I had some quite cute shots of Frankie playing, this one was the most appealing to me as it seemed to emphasise how small she was and brought out the texture of her coat . I wanted to focus on her sleeping faceEditing
I cropped a little adjusted the contrast, added a slight lomo effect and a little soft focus to bring attention to the puppy's headIn my camera bag
I nearly always have my Nikon D5100 with me and I tend to use the telephoto 55-300mm lens most of the time. I do also carry the kit lens at times and some filters. I also have a Nikon J2 with a 10-30mm kit lens which is good for more wide angle shots and if I can't carry the bigger camera. If it's raining I use an Olympus TG-1 which is waterproof! I do have a tripod & monopod but tend not to use them very often. I always have spare battery and SD cards as well as bits and bobs for cleaning my kit or protecting it from the wet.Feedback
I'm very much an opportunist so I would definitely suggest the best equipment you have is your eyes, keeping them open and being receptive to any opportunities, and expecting the unexpected. Getting a good, slightly unusual angle can help to bring a fresh perspective. It's worth capturing your subject in different ways, not just a standard action shot.
