Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a reservoir near where I used to live. I visited it regularly to see the bird life and this was a fairly dull winter's day with only a light breeze.

Time

This was taken late morning when the light was quite good.

Lighting

Despite being a bit flat, the light was good enough to allow fast shutter speed without too high ISO. I liked the way the light hit the bird's wings and the ripples in the water

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D5100 using a 55-300mm lens, hand held

Inspiration

I enjoy photographing birds in flight and this particular bird about to land in the water was a great opportunity to capture a simple but striking image with beautiful shapes and virtually monochromatic giving almost an abstract feel to it

Editing

Just some slight cropping to get the negative space right, and some adjustment to contrast

In my camera bag

I carry 3 Nikons, the D5100 with 55-300mm lens, a P90 and a J2 ( with a 10-30mm lens) I sometimes use a monopod or tripod. I carry a polarising filter Obviously spare batteries and SD cards etc.

Feedback

It's well worth watching the patterns of flight in the particular bird species you are wanting to capture. I find focussing on one bird and following it and taking a number of shots can yield nice results, especially if you can capture reflections. I use fast shutter speed and fairly shallow depth of field to help emphasize the bird as the main subject.
