Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Goodwood Revival in 2015 where many wonderful vintage cars can be seen: this is an Aston Martin DB5 as seen in the Bond films

Time

This was taken in the mid afternoon, after the large crowds had thinned a little, but it was still difficult to get a clear shot because so many people were admiring the car (but I quite liked their reflections in the chrome and glass)

Lighting

It was tricky to capture the details and also some background against the light of the sky, especially as the light made it difficult to see what the image was on the screen of the camera

Equipment

I was dressed in vintage clothing so didn't want to carry my usual kit, so I used my Nikon J2 with 10-30mm lens (you can see me reflected in the glass & chrome!) handheld, no flash

Inspiration

I think it's an iconic car but wanted to capture the essence of it, and the combination of the car's curves against the black and white geometric tiling caught my eye

Editing

I tweaked the contrast, added a little Orton effect and converted to black & white to emphasise the shapes and contrasts

In my camera bag

I usually carry a Nikon D5100 with 55-300mm telephoto lens, but this would have been impractical on this occasion. I tend to have filters, monopod/tripod in my car but due to health issues can't carry them so keep it simple. I do always have a spare battery & SD card as well as gear to protect my camera in the event of rain.

Feedback

I think it's good to try to capture a different perspective on a subject that has been photographed from many angles and is an iconic well known subject. I always try to give a feeling of the essence of the subject and as always with my photography, there was an element of serendipity and opportunistism. My motto is be prepared for anything!
